Terushima Clock Shop was established in a old building on Section 1, Zhong-Shan North Road by a Japanese owner before World War II. One of the Taiwanese shopkeepers, Deng took over the shop after the war. The building had been transformed into an izakaya bar, but retained its overall architectural design up until now. Section 1 of Zhong Shan North Road was once a imperial shrine visiting path connecting Taipei city and the Taiwan Grand Shrine. This Shrine is now Grand Hotel Taipei, but its old visiting path can be identified on Lane 1, Section 4 of Zhong Shan North Road. Chen’s video piece, “The visiting path of Taiwan Grand Shrine”, screen at Terushima Clock Shop, recreates the cityscape of Taipei before and after WWII, Directly referencing the relationship between the shop and the visiting path, the video examines how city spaces and personal memories interline with history.
